Description
This hands-on fraction project helps students understand fractions as equal parts—not just memorize rules. Through exploration, discussion, and visual models, students learn to distinguish equal and unequal parts while building a strong conceptual foundation for fractions.
This two-day fraction lesson is the opening of my complete fraction unit and includes the same investigations, fraction anchor charts, and teacher think-alouds used in the full unit. It is fully self-contained and can be taught on its own, while also serving as the natural starting point for the entire unit.
What Makes This Lesson Different
Rather than starting with symbols and procedures, this lesson focuses on fractions are equal parts and gives students repeated opportunities to reason, talk, and reflect. Students create and use fraction anchor charts, examine examples and non-examples, and participate in meaningful math discourse that helps prevent common fraction misconceptions.
If you’re looking for a thoughtful way to launch fractions—or want to see how my full unit approaches fraction instruction—this lesson gives you a clear picture of both.
I created this resource for two reasons:
- Some teachers want to try my approach to teaching fractions before committing to the full unit
- Others want a high-quality, hands-on way to launch fractions without replacing their entire curriculum
This lesson does both.
It is fully usable on its own and includes everything you need to teach a strong, concept-based introduction to fractions over two days. At the same time, it is intentionally designed as the starting point of a much larger learning progression.
If you like how this lesson is structured—the investigations, math talk, think-alouds, and focus on avoiding common misconceptions—you’ll love how the full unit builds on this foundation.
How This Lesson Fits Into the Bigger Picture
This resource includes a slightly modified version of the first two lessons from my complete fractions unit. In the full unit (18 total lessons!), students continue to:
- Deepen their understanding of fractions as equal parts
- Represent fractions in multiple ways
- Compare, order, and reason about fractions
- Build fraction number sense before formal procedures
Nothing here is watered down or simplified. You’re seeing the real starting point of the unit. If you later decide to purchase the complete Fractions Unit, you’ll already be perfectly aligned—no reteaching, no gaps.
A link to the full unit is included RIGHT HERE.
Is This Resource Right for You? Choose this single lesson if you:
