Description
This comprehensive 3rd – 5th grade spelling resource gives teachers 45 high frequency spelling lists alongside flexible tools for tracking progress, student practice activities, and a personalized words-from-writing component — everything you need for word work, spelling intervention, and differentiation.
If your intermediate students are still stumbling over the high frequency words they need every day in their writing, this resource was built for exactly that gap.
Many pattern-based and morphological spelling programs do important work — but high frequency words often get left behind.
Research tells us that a small set of commonly used words makes up more than half of everything students encounter in print, and yet these are the very words that students across grade levels continue to misspell in their writing. This resource makes sure those words get the direct, explicit attention they deserve.
What’s Included:
- 45 high frequency spelling lists for grades 3–5, moving from most common to more challenging as well as content-specific academic vocabulary
- 20 suggested practice activities that work with supplies already in your classroom — whiteboards, pencils, colored markers, and more. No additional printables required.
- A words-from-writing component with directions for use and student recording forms — perfect for personalizing spelling work
- Three flexible tracking and record-keeping sheets with suggestions for use
- A detailed how-to section so you can implement this resource in the way that works best for your classroom
Ways to Use This Resource:
- As a supplement to any existing spelling or word study program
- For small group spelling intervention or special education programs
- For one-on-one spelling support
- With your whole class as part of a robust word work program

- For enrichment — perfect if you have a younger student needing a bit more challenge
A Note on the Lists:
The lists are sequenced by a combination of frequency and difficulty — not strictly easiest to hardest. Early lists prioritize the words students need most urgently in their writing. Later lists move into more sophisticated territory, including academic vocabulary and content-area words that intermediate students need as writers and thinkers. Use any or all of the lists depending on your students’ needs.
Teachers who prefer not to use pre- or post- testing can simply assign lists and provide practice experiences with the words. There is no single right way to use this resource — it was designed to flex around the way you teach.
Supports CCSS Language Standards L.3.2, L.4.2, L.5.2 and more
