Writing Conventions Checklists | Elementary Writing Assessments & Rubrics Gr 1-5

$9.00

Description

This diagnostic writing assessment system covers 1st-5th grade, with writing rubrics, checklists, and writing prompts spanning ideas, organization, elaboration, sentence fluency, and writing mechanics and conventions. Kid-friendly writing checklists, progress monitoring tracking sheets, and a conventions/literacy continuum make this a fit for any classroom teacher, special education teacher, or interventionist, no matter what curriculum you use.

Why This Resource Exists

Most writing assessments stop at a score–we’ve all collected “data” and then done nothing with it. A writing score tells you where a student stands, but it doesn’t tell you what to do about it.

This resource is built around one idea: assess only to know what to teach. Every checklist inside this powerful resource shows you exactly what a student’s writing already does, and exactly what it doesn’t yet, so you walk away with a plan instead of just a number.

Does it help with grading, parent/teacher conferences and IEP’s? Of course…but it ALSO helps you know what to teach–and to whom.

What’s Included

  • Grade-level rubrics for grades 1 through 5, each broken into simple, checkable look-fors across five traits: Ideas & Content, Organization, Elaboration & Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions
  • Four detailed Conventions skill progressions (Capitalization, End & Sentence Punctuation, Spelling Patterns, and Sentence Construction), sequenced from earliest to most advanced skill
  • Two full prompt banks (grades 1-3 and grades 3-5) covering opinion, narrative, and informational writing, screened so every student can access every prompt regardless of background. Third grade is included in both so you can choose what works best for your population.
  • Three ways to track results: an Individual Student Profile for full detail, a Whole-Class Overview for a fast at-a-glance read, and a Digital Class Tracker for teachers who want everything in one spreadsheet
  • Kid-friendly “I Can” checklists, split into Writing and Editing versions, built for classroom instruction, not for use during the actual assessment
  • Full teacher directions covering how to give the assessment, how to score it, and how to turn results into instruction

How It Works

Give a prompt. Check off what the writing shows. Teach from the pattern. Give the same prompt bank again in the winter, and again in the spring (or as often as you want!), and the same checklist shows you real growth across the year, not just a single snapshot.

Built to Work However You Teach

This isn’t locked to one state’s standards or one curriculum. Whatever you’re already teaching, this resource shows you exactly where your students stand against it. If a student needs more support, step down to an earlier grade’s checklist using the same writing sample, no new assessment required. If a student is ready for more, the next grade’s checklist is a ready-made source of enrichment ideas.

By the way…these prompts are meant to be handwritten, not typed. Autocorrect would quietly fix the very errors this resource is built to catch, and research backs up handwriting as the more accurate picture of what a student can really do on their own.

A Note on Licensing

This resource is licensed for one classroom, one teacher. For school or district licensing, reach out directly. This continuum would be a great way to get teachers talking across grade levels using the same expectations.
