Description
Partners of 10, also called friends of 10 or number partners to 10, is one of those skills that looks solid in isolation and falls apart under pressure. This resource is geared for Grade 1 Illustrative math classrooms and gives your students five different ways to practice finding partners of 10 until it’s automatic, not something they have to work out every single time.
Does this sound familiar? Your first graders can find partners of 10 when you slow down and walk them through it, but the second they need that skill inside an actual addition problem (making a ten to solve 8 + 5, for example) they’re back to counting on their fingers from 1.
This resource is geared toward helping fix that gap!
What’s included:
- Ten-Frame Fill, where students build a number on a ten frame and find its missing partner
- Break Apart 10, a hands-on partners of 10 game with counters, students count how many are hidden versus how many are showing
- Find My Partner, a matching game with number cards for finding pairs that make 10
- Build My Ten, an equation mat activity that connects partners of 10 directly to addition equations like 7 + ___ = 10
- Partner Hunt, a Go Fish style card game, the best activity for revealing whether a student truly knows their partners of 10 or is still counting them out
- 10 independent practice pages (five formats, two versions of each) covering number bonds, ten frames, missing number equations, and more, perfect for individual practice, centers, bell ringers, or a quick assessment
Each of the five instructional activities includes the lesson purpose, materials, step-by-step directions, and teacher “look-fors”, so your prep is done for you. No special manipulatives needed, counters, connecting cubes, buttons, mini erasers, pennies, or whatever you already have on hand will work. Printable counters are included too.
This resource works as a whole class warm-up, a small group intervention, or special education support. Whatever setting you’re using it in, the process is the same: notice the gap, pull the matching activity, go. No formal assessment required.
Great for kindergarten and first grade classrooms looking for hands-on partners of 10 activities, partners of 10 games, and partners of 10 centers that build real fluency, not just one-time practice. Designed for Illustrative Math, but 100% appropriate for ANY first grade classroom, tutoring environment, or homeschool!
