Description
Teaching the four types of sentences gets a lot more interesting when students are actually doing something with them. This hands-on grammar resource for grades 3, 4, and 5 gives students multiple ways to build, sort, identify, and write declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative sentences — moving from hands-on manipulation to independent practice in one complete, low-prep package.
Activity 1: Sentence Sort
Students cut apart 24 sentence cards, sort them into four categories by sentence type, and add the correct end punctuation to each one. Cards cover a mix of topics and are included in two formats: sorted by type for teacher assembly and mixed for student sorting. Two recording sheets are included.
Activity 2: Same Idea, Four Ways
Students see four different topics, each written as all four sentence types. Using a color code, they identify each sentence type by coloring a small square. One more way to interact with the topic! Answer key is included.
Activity 3: Sentence Detectives
Students use their own independent reading books to hunt for real examples of each sentence type and record what they find. A second page extends the activity with author’s craft questions that push students to think about why authors choose specific sentence types and what effect those choices have on the reader.
Practice Pages
Two practice pages give students additional independent application. Page 1 asks students to identify sentence types and add correct end punctuation. An answer key is included. Page 2 asks students to write their own sentences using two provided topics and one topic of their own choosing. This moves students from sorting and identifying to actually WRITING the four types of sentences!
Exit Slips
Two exit slip versions assess the same skills so you can check understanding at the end of the lesson and again after a review or follow-up. Both versions include an identify-and-punctuate section and a matching section. Answer keys are included.
Everything follows a gradual release structure — teacher-led introduction, partner manipulation, guided practice, independent application — so students build real understanding rather than just memorizing definitions.
