The ability to read a complex text and use “context clues” to help figure out new words is a critical skill for students who are working toward reading more challenging texts. Whether you teach from the Common Core or any other set of rigorous standards, using context clues is one many tools every reader should have in their reader’s toolbox!
Watch for students trying to explain their thinking by using the right part of speech | if the missing word is an adjective, the students should be able to recognize what KIND of word needs to be fit the missing spot.
Remember to model YOUR thinking when you come across tricky words in texts you share with the class as well.
Also included are several recording sheets and supplemental ideas to allow for flexibility of use. ENJOY!
