Historical fiction is a powerful genre that connects social studies and literacy. This resource (now with digital access!) is one I use with my historical fiction unit. My unit includes literature circles and book clubs–and these historical fiction lessons and activities are geared toward helping students meet the rigor of your literacy standards.

There are countless ways to use it–no matter how you teach historical fiction! Minilessons are included to help you tackle this genre with short texts like picture books, but also with a more in-depth classroom book study. You can use it in a number of ways…
Consider trying…
- Whole class novels…everyone reads the same historical fiction book but you break into small groups for discussion
- Literature circles…where each group reads a different historical fiction book
- Book Clubs…where each student self-selects a historical fiction book that interests him/her
- Other…use components of this resource to accompany read alouds—even with picture books! Use this resource to help you model so many important skills with books YOU choose and love!
