Description
This set of poetry writing lessons is geared toward helping you help your students explore five different poetry forms while giving YOU the opportunity to teach meaningful literacy lessons that supplement the poetry activities. Mentor poems included to help!
As teachers, we rarely have time to waste–and any time that we can “double-dip” and combine lessons, the better! Add in the extra bonus of being able to do the lessons in person or digitally, and we have a winner!
Have fun, get creative, and watch your students shine!
Each type of poem includes the following:
- A brief description of the “rules” of the poem.
- A sample poem to study and use as a mentor text.
- A minilesson for you to use as you teach the poem format.
- Blank template for students to write their own poems—either on reproducible pages or on digital slides. These are in both color and low ink versions.
- A poem template with blank space for students to add illustrations or other work to complement their writing.
Suggestions for use:
- Consider using as a part of a short poetry study, perhaps in conjunction with National Poetry Month (April).
- Build anchor charts of the teaching points you cover.
- Use to review key writing minilessons. Concepts presented in the minilessons include:
- Syllables
- Parts of speech
- Descriptive language
- Similes and metaphors
- Synonyms and antonyms
- Contractions using “I”
- Basic spelling patterns
- Use at different times during the year when you are between units and want a fun yet productive writing lesson.
- Use when you have a substitute teacher. No prep and ready to go!
- Perfect for a literacy center or independent work!
- Finish your work with a poetry celebration. Have students share their work in different ways—by making a class book, presentations to the class, or small group sharing.
- Students have a favorite type of poem? Make as many copies (print or digital) as they want!
- publish poems to display—either using the digital access or printed versions. Add illustrations to give it the “wow” factor!
