Description
Descriptive writing–especially narrative writing–can be tricky for students. I wanted a way to engage my students in how to really see how writers “show” the reader what is happening without “telling”–and WITHOUT using boring practice sheets—and by doing “real writing”.
I also really wanted to be able to tie this to critical reading and have my students study the language that real authors use and notice the visual images created with good description, so I used these cards as a springboard for that as well. My students just loved using them, and I hope yours do as well.
I have included actual photos and teaching tips for you as well as all 32 task cards in both color and black and white as well as a partner activity that you may find valuable. I even have some blank cards if you want to try writing your own!
Sometimes we get so bogged down in huge writing projects that we forget how valuable short “practice writes” can be. It can really help students feel successful, “see” what we mean about “show not tell”, and be able to generate and recognize quality work. Download the preview to see more!
