Subtraction with regrouping (within 1,000) is a concept typically taught in third and fourth grade math classes. It is a critical skill that builds upon both subtraction fact fluency and place value understanding.

Students can be taught this skill through a variety of strategies such as number lines, hundreds charts, and base 10 blocks to build conceptual understanding.

The eventual goal, however, is that students will be able to fluently and efficiently solve subtraction with regrouping problems, typically resulting in the development of an algorithm, whether that be partial differences or the standard algorithm.

These Math Skill Packs are perfect to enhance your math program, to use as additional help for intervention groups, or to provide additional practice on needed skills. I hope you find them useful!

• A set of increasingly challenging task cards: These 24 cards are perfect for projecting (full size) to use as warm ups or to send digitally. They are also included 4 per page to use as printable task cards for review games, math centers, partner work, or more!

• Two practice sheets: Use these sheets after you teach for students to practice the skill—either alone or in pairs. These pages can also be used as homework if needed. “FORM A” has simpler problems and then “FORM B” boosts the challenge a bit.

• Two formative assessments: These two assessments are quick snapshots of student progress and can help you decide who is on track and who needs more coaching. They are half pages so they are low ink and easy to score.

• Two summative assessments: These are full-page assessments with more problems at a range of difficulty levels. They will allow you to see which students are struggling with different levels of performance to give you guidance on how to help them achieve mastery.

• Recording sheets (teacher and students): I’ve included a recording form for students to do their work and record their answers for the task cards if you choose to use them. I have also included a recording form for YOU to use to note which students need coaching/review and a place to take notes on when you meet with them and what you notice. Perfect for RTI!

• Answer keys: No worries—all answers are included.
