Description
The Science of Reading movement states that understanding word parts and vocabulary is crucial for elementary students as it forms the foundation of their reading and comprehension skills. Learning word parts, such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words, enables students to decode unfamiliar words, enhancing their ability to understand and use new vocabulary.
This skill not only supports reading fluency but also boosts confidence in tackling complex texts. Additionally, a strong vocabulary is essential for effective communication, critical thinking, and academic success across all subjects. By mastering word parts and vocabulary early on, students are better equipped to handle the more advanced reading required in upper grades.
We all know how important that is!
Unfortunately, most upper elementary teachers are not provided an organized, systematic approach for helping students tackle this type of word work. This is how this resource came to be! After tons of research, exploration, and work–I have created a way for all of us to include this word study in our week–whether you want to dedicate 15 minutes per week or 15 or more minutes per day. I’ve got you covered!
In other words–I’ve given you an introductory lesson for 12 weeks of suffix instruction and then a variety of extensions to use if you wish.
The whole point of this resource is for you to be able to pick and choose from the included components. Check out the options!
- Background information about the Science of Reading and vocabulary instruction
- List of the 12 included suffixes to help you with your long range planning
- Ideas for use and strategies for implementation including an easy-to-use “kick off” minilesson for each morpheme (with 3 options for use)
- A page for each morpheme that explains its meaning, gives background, and then has a grid of 15 words that fit the pattern. This could be used to hang up in the classroom or passed out to students to keep as a part of a reference guide. (12 pages)
- A page for students to collect words on their own. The background information is included, but instead of a collection of pregathered words, the chart is blank for students to collect their own words from the book they read or from environmental print. (12 pages)
- A page for each morpheme to use as a “Class Collection” tool. I hang these up on a board for students to interact with and add words to as they find them. We also work to “notice” them in the books we share as a class.
- Blank pages for you to use if you have additional prefixes that you need to teach
- Tons of additional activities to supplement your word hunting!
- Print and digital access
- Everything you need for 12 full weeks of instruction!
- Also available bundled with all three morphemes–prefixes, suffixes, and roots for 36 weeks of instruction!
Check out the preview for a more visual look at what you get!
