Description
Finding writing prompts that genuinely engage upper elementary students is harder than it should be. Too many prompts are vague, uninspiring, or so open-ended that students don’t know where to start. The result is a blank page, a restless class, and a writing block that feels impossible to push through.
Cliffhangers are different.
Each prompt drops students into the middle of a high-interest story scene – and stops right at the suspenseful moment. Students pick up where the story leaves off and take it wherever they want to go. The story starter does the hard work of getting them started. What happens next is entirely up to them.
The result is writing that is creative, engaged, and genuinely fun to read.
Use Cliffhangers as a whole class writing experience, a writing center rotation, a creative writing supplement, morning work, or an early finisher option. The consistent two-page format and zero-prep design make it easy to fit into your classroom in whatever way works best for you.

WHAT MAKES CLIFFHANGER PROMPTS DIFFERENT
Every prompt is genuinely engaging – these are not generic writing topics. Each one drops students into the middle of a scene and leaves them wanting to know what happens next.
The two-page format gives students real writing space. There’s no half-page box that signals “write a little and you’re done.” Students have room to actually develop their stories.
The consistent format means you introduce it once and never explain it again. Students know exactly what to do every single month.
The optional assessment tools mean you can keep this completely low stakes or use it as real evidence of narrative writing growth. You decide.
ORGANIZATION AND FLEXIBILITY
Prompts are arranged to follow a typical school year, starting in August/September and running through July/August. Pull the right month’s prompts at the right time without any extra planning.
That said, most prompts work beautifully outside their intended month. Use them in any order that fits your class and your calendar.
DIFFERENTIATION NOTES
This resource works for a wide range of writers – not just your strongest ones. Students who need support can use speech-to-text, work with a partner, or sketch a quick story map before writing. Students who need more challenge can write both prompts, add a twist ending, or go back and layer in dialogue and description.
Great narrative writing starts with a great story starter. This resource gives your students 24 of them!
