Description
Place Value to 1,000– especially using standard form, expanded form, and written form–is a concept typically taught in second and third grade. It is a critical skill that helps students understand the value of places in the ones, tens, and hundreds.
Students at this age need to build numbers whenever possible, learning that it takes ten “ones to make a ten and ten “tens” to make a hundred.
When students are moving from this more concrete phase to a more representational phase, they need to understand how the value of a digit is impacted by its place. 4 ones is ten times more than 4 tens.
Helping students learn how to read and write numbers in different ways helps cement that understanding. Writing “words” is so important as a life skill—and attending to the subtle differences between words like “seventy” and “seventeen” is key.
Similarly, learning to write in expanded form can cement their understanding of how the “place” affects the value. Recognizing the difference between 405 and 450 is essential—so knowing that the first is represented with 400 + 5 and the second with 400 + 50 can help them show their understanding.
To add a “twist”, you can try giving students numbers out of order ( 50 + 4 + 700) to see if they are attending to the values. Similarly, by having more than one number per place (500 + 40 + 30 +2 ) can help students learn to combine amounts in a given place and find total value. This is one way to build the foundation for the addition algorithm.
These Math Skill Packs are perfect to enhance your math program, to use as additional help for intervention groups, or to provide additional practice on needed skills. I hope you find them useful!
What do you get?
- A set of increasingly challenging task cards: These 24 cards are perfect for projecting (full size) to use as warm ups or to send digitally. They are also included 4 per page to use as printable task cards for review games, math centers, partner work, or more!
- Two practice sheets: Use these sheets after you teach for students to practice the skill—either alone or in pairs. These pages can also be used as homework if needed. “FORM A” has simpler problems and then “FORM B” boosts the challenge a bit.
- Two formative assessments: These two assessments are quick snapshots of student progress and can help you decide who is on track and who needs more coaching. They are half pages so they are low ink and easy to score.
- Two summative assessments: These are full-page assessments with more problems at a range of difficulty levels. They will allow you to see which students are struggling with different levels of performance to give you guidance on how to help them achieve mastery.
- Recording sheets (teacher and students): I’ve included a recording form for students to do their work and record their answers for the task cards if you choose to use them. I have also included a recording form for YOU to use to note which students need coaching/review and a place to take notes on when you meet with them and what you notice. Perfect for RTI!
- Answer keys: No worries—all answers are included.
And don’t forget–you can use these as printable resources or digitally!
